About the event
The Alexandria Community Remembrance Project will host “In Remembrance of Joseph McCoy: An Evening of Reflection with Dr. Rodney Sadler” on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Roberts Memorial United Methodist Church, 606 S. Washington Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
Dr. Sadler will present Governed by Fear and Hate: The Tools of the Supremacist State, exploring the relationship between violence, power, and the people. This secular program is held in a historic church deeply connected to the McCoy family and the broader African American history of Alexandria.
The event is part of the city’s ongoing work to honor the memory of Joseph McCoy, a young Black man lynched in Alexandria in 1897, and to confront the legacy of racial terror in Virginia.
