The NAACP Alexandria Branch and the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project (ACRP) are partnering this month to host two powerful community programs centered on civil rights education, advocacy, and historical truth-telling. These events highlight Alexandria’s ongoing commitment to confronting racial injustice while equipping residents with the tools to advocate for equity today.

In Remembrance of Joseph McCoy — April 23, 2026

The Alexandria Community Remembrance Project will host “In Remembrance of Joseph McCoy: An Evening of Reflection with Dr. Rodney Sadler” on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Roberts Memorial United Methodist Church, 606 S. Washington Street. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Dr. Sadler will present Governed by Fear and Hate: The Tools of the Supremacist State, exploring the relationship between violence, power, and the people. This secular program is held in a historic church deeply connected to the McCoy family and the broader African American history of Alexandria.

The event is part of the city’s ongoing work to honor the memory of Joseph McCoy, a young Black man lynched in Alexandria in 1897, and to confront the legacy of racial terror in Virginia. For disability accommodations, contact Nicole Quinn at historicalexandria@alexandriava.gov or 703.746.4554 (Virginia Relay 711).

Civil Rights Advocacy Workshop — April 24, 2026

The NAACP Alexandria Branch will host a Civil Rights Advocacy Workshop on Friday, April 24, from 6–8 p.m. at the Durant Center, 1605 Cameron Street. This free workshop, led by Wisdom O. Cole, NAACP Senior National Director of Advocacy, will provide participants with practical skills and knowledge essential for effective civic engagement.
